Inspiring the Next Generation: Local Students Explore Airborne Wind Energy at Kitemill

Today, Kitemill welcomed 40 enthusiastic students from nearby schools for an exciting day dedicated to wind, innovation, and the future of energy. This yearly tradition is our way of connecting with the local community while inspiring the engineers, scientists, and changemakers of tomorrow.

Divided into smaller groups, the students toured our workshop, visited our test site, and attended engaging presentations about how Kitemill is developing cutting-edge airborne wind energy technology. Our team introduced them to the basics of wind power using kites, and explained how our work could one day transform the way the world produces renewable energy.

We see airborne wind energy as more than a technological breakthrough — it's a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration. Its future depends on a wide range of skilled professionals. Engineers and technicians will develop and operate the systems; meteorologists will support operations through wind resource analysis; data scientists and automation experts will drive efficiency with AI; and electricians, software developers, environmental scientists, and even communicators and policy-makers will help scale the technology and ensure societal impact.

It was particularly meaningful that today’s event was led by Manoj, who first came to Kitemill as a student intern from TU Delft, where he participated in the Airborne Wind Energy course led by Prof. Roland Schmehl. Today, Manoj is a full-time member of the Kitemill team, serving as a senior engineer on aerodynamic and mechanical design. He now coordinates internships and visits like this one, helping a new generation of students gain real-world experience with what may be the most scalable renewable energy technology under development.

We're proud to see how former student visitors have already begun to enter the job market, and we hope many of today’s curious minds will follow in their footsteps. Whether they become engineers, mechanics, software developers, electricians, environmental scientists, or even future politicians — we believe they all have a role to play in shaping a sustainable energy future.
